Here are a few boards I've done over the past few months. The first 2 are some personal projects that have been shelved (which means deadend!) and the last one is a commercial I did for a new Ipad App.

Zooooo Sketches

Some new Zoo sketches...except for the elephant, he's a repeat offender. So the Vancouver Zoo slightly trumps the "Ottawa Zoo" (which is a farm, with no more than pigs and cows ect.) Although the Vancouver Zoo is like a low security prison. The Rhino enclosure consists of nothing but a road barrier, and the cheetah is surrounded by a common chain link fence, meant to keep children safe in their backyards.

Last month I decided to attempt the 11 Second club again...here is a scanned version of the one I submitted. I received a first place and was asked by Steven Hawthorne to be interviewed! The Smurfs

I've Been busy finishing up work on The Smurfs movie at Sony Animation. I've had such a great experience on this film, the crew is fantastic, I'm learning so much everyday and I am disappointed it's coming to an end in a few weeks! I came onto the project in late November about half way through production, with very little 3d knowledge and I feel fortunate to have learned and worked with the super talented folks here in Vancouver! On another note, I just signed up for the Stephen Silver character design course and start in early June, I am very excited! Here are some Cafe scribbles and a character I've recently begun to flesh out for a dialogue test! All feedback is most definately welcome!

Jake and the Neverland Pirates

I had the privilege of working on this great new Disney TV show called Jake and the Neverland Pirates. There were so many talented artists involved, a huge shout out to Mercury Filmworks, all the animation, layouts and 3d were done there, they set a huge standard for TV!
This show is not 3d, nor is it traditionally drawn...it's done in ToonBoom Harmony and is considered "paper cutout animation". It premiers on Valentines Day...for any 2-6 year old reading this blog.

Jimmy Two Shoes

I spent about 8 months working with the super talented Kyle Marshall, Sean Scott, Darren Ward and Steve Lambe on Jimmy Two Shoes, season 2. I was doing mainly storyboard clean-up and revisions along side some of the finest storyboard folks in town. During my time I was lucky enough to work with the amazing Steve Lambe (character designer season 2) and help out doing some board specific poses for the animators. Above are a bunch of Miseryvillians that have eaten pickles and gotten that horrid plague...pickle zombies.

Here are some board poses, and costume changes all based off the talented Steve lambe. Everything from cyclopse lions, paintball bunnies, fighting food and an Irish street kid named Peep. Be sure to check out the talented crew:

Here are some sketches I did while at the airport and Starbucks. These were done with ballpoint pen and grayscale markers. I'm going to try and post gestures/cafe drawings every friday for the next while, to get back into the groove of things. I've been neglecting drawing for the past while, and putting alot of time into work on an exciting new Disney tv show called Jake and the Neverland Pirates! Hope everyone is well.

On a more exciting note, this is a preliminary photo shop painting of my new car. It's a Mazda 626, and I've decided to go all out in it's transformation to the Jurassic park car. It should be done by early June, and it'll probably be stolen or vandalized by mid June. A shout out to Tommy and Collin for making this possible.

Animation Mentor Update

This is some work I did last term at Animation Mentor. I am not particularely proud, but I am happy to be learning the software. Unfortunately due to some overlapping work contracts, Animation Mentor will have to be put on hold for a while; and I will be forced to stop after completing my term 2 in March.

Below are thumbnails for the first assignment of term 2, "A Ball Kick", along with some balance sketches.

November 11 Second Club- Character and Planning

I've taken some great suggestions from you guys, and I've tried to incorporate them into my character and thumbnails. If you can deciefer what's going on in my story poses, I would love some feedback...also on the overall design. I've kind of decided to make this into a 2 month project, because of a busy schedual...I don't want to find myself rushing it. But I will definately make sure to get a finished rough version into the competition. I tried to force myself to plan more than usual, when I was at "The Princess and the Frog" presentation by Eric Goldberg he told the audience that 85% of his time on a scene goes into planning...that blew my mind.

I took it from 1% to maybe 10%....baby steps.

All your thoughts and comments help alot

November 11 Second Club- Character concepts

Hey All- I'm going to attempt the November 11 second club, I will be posting my progress every week or so...to get feedback from you guys (I find I was missing constant feedback on the last one I did) So hopefully you will see some blocking stages, keys, breakdowns....and maybe even a finished animation by the end of the month. For now, this is Hugo ( based off my favourite "Lost" character)- it was honestly really tough to design a fat caterpillar that doesn't resemble "A Bugs Life" design. Hopefully he looks different enough...
I would love feedback that I can incorporate into my studies and keys next week. Thanks!

The Ottawa International Animation Festival was a blast this year! Sitting down with Eric Goldberg for an interview and hearing him talk about the future of Walt Disney and traditional animation was well worth the 200$! On the left is Dawn, director of the talent development program at Walt Disney Studios, I forced her into the picture against her will, but I think it makes it that much better!!!

I also had nothing for him to sign....little did I know I had a sketch of the Genie hiding away in my sketchbook. As terrifying as it was to show him my version of the genie, he gave an approving nod and said, "you know what.....it's kinda on model".

September 11 Second Club....round 2

I thought I'd try this months 11 second club again. Last month I received an 18th/188 entries, I'm hoping to improve upon that... This took me about 20 days...I kind of got uninterested in this during the last week, but I am happy to have finished it. Thanks to Collin for helping me refine the character, and to Ian and Collin for animation feedback. Some of the best feedback I received was from my girlfriend Gillian, an outsiders opinion is always great!

Keys/Breakdowns & Character Sketches...

Well, I thought I would thow in my keys and breakdowns, seeing as I lost all my old linetests. I really tried to block out this animation, which is extremely hard to do...espiecally when using alot of offset timing. I tried to treat it as if I were going to give my keys to an inbetweener....poor inbetweener. I also included character sketches. The character came rather qucikly, as soon as I heard the dialogue I pictured Esma (Emperors New Groove). I remembered a lady I had drawn at a coffe shop (bottom right) so I based it off her, and referenced alot of Esma and Jafar for the animation and design. And the bird is....basically a glorified clipart. Hope you like it! All feedback and comments are much appreciated!!

This is my 11 second club entry for August, I had alot of fun animating it, and I hope to do that competition again! Next time I am definately going to focus more on story and acting, as apposed to character(and just getting the damn thing done!). If you think this is worthy, toss me a vote at The 11 Second Club !! Animation thought process....

Hey! Alright so I thought I would post some of my animated thought process. Basically I used a character I designed in my second year of school, and I tweaked things last month to make him a little more animatable. I have some thumbnails up there, I definately have ALOT more, but for the life of me, I couldn't find them. I really tried to find out all my poses, some breakdowns, and alot of timing and spacing with those thumbs. One of the big things that helped me this month was getting warmed up befor drawing. Every time I sat down to animate, I would draw a disney screencap, either a page, or just one drawing, depending on how I felt. I think it really helped my overal construction, linework, appeal and expression/style. It was almost like learning from osmosis, after sketching these properly, and trying to get them on model, it go me in a good groove to animate.

Other that that....I will through up some linetests shortly, but I really didn't do all that many linetests, I tried to limit myself to one a day, sometimes I did one every 3-4 days just because I wanted to try and depend on flipping, and seeing timing and spacing with the naked eye. Overall I am only really satisfied with about 40 frames, and even they need alot of tweaks. But I am happy to have met my goal to just complete it, it is actually quite challenging on it's own. I plan to compete again in the September competiton, and hopefully my focus will be more on story and better acting...than completion, and trying to keep the character on model. Simpler character! Hey- These are some sketches I did at the Zoo last week. They were done with Ebony, then I threw in a quick grayscale on PS. Unfortunately the Zoo was PACKED, not much room to draw...and I think we were only there for 3-4 hrs...but w/e. We also went to Chuck Gammage studio with Charged, he really liked it...but they have no work right now... -Chuck is the nicest guy in the world, and it is a super sweet studio, I would LOVE to work there! Some bad news...Charged didn't make the Ottawa Festival....not surprising because it wasn't artsy enough...as we've been told my many...but we have our fingers crossed on many more festivals!

Guys in suits...?

I was sketching at Starbucks a while ago, and started to notice how forced guys suits were. Either they barely fit, or they were too big...or their necks were bulging. So I decided yesterday to do these guys...practice my painting and inking a little more. I've been working on my characters quite abit too. I've always been told that's the weakest part of my portfolio...sooo practice practice practice. And I'm animating quite abit this month, doing last months 11 second club(because it was a good dialogue!) Hopefull I'll be in next months competition! AND I'm going to the Toronto ZOO thursday!! Aswell as Chuck Gammage!

Some funky faces, mostly from people I've drawn at the mall! Lots of fun to characturize!

These are some gestures I've been doing at Starbucks. I tried a new medium, using black pen and then doing a quick and light tonal with a greyscale marker. I also tried doing the gesture with the marker 1st, and then going in with pen. I'd still like for these to be looser, like one line drawings, but it's hard for me not to finish drawings. I had alot of fun trying to work on my weakness, like capturing people in movement, and giving people personality! I'd love to hear feedback!

These are some thumbnails I did, while doing Location Design at Mercury filmworks. Also done with pencil and marker, or pen and marker. Enjoy!

Hey! So we've been talking about starting a sketch blog, right? I put a link on the right column that says "sketch blog". Basically anyone that wants to join has to send me their email, so I can give you people permission to post your own sketches. We were thinking that every month is a different theme, you can do as many or as little drawings as you want, in your own creative style...any medium. It'd be alot of fun and keep us all sketching and doing our own thing. June is going to be a "Warrior" theme. I was thinking that at the end of the month, we vote the best sketch, and the winner gets to pick the next months theme. CHARGED - Animated Short Film

This is my Final film in my third year at Algonquin College. I teamed up with Collin Tsandilis & Mayrhosby Yeoshen to Produce the film. Thanks to our mentor, Ian Jeans, all the Algonquin Staff and everyone else who contributed. A huge thanks to my family; for love and support, my girlfriend; for constantly pushing me and always being there. Lastly, to my classmates for pushing eachother and always willing to lend a hand! 11 Second Club

Right Now I am in the process of doing my first 11 second club animation. I basically took a charcacter I did in my second year at Algonquin, and did some tweaks on him. For the last week I have just been drawing him, thumbnailing and practicing hands, mouth shapes and breaking down a video reference action to the dialogue. I really want to work on my weaknesses during this animation, and anything I didn't get to do alot of during the film. Which is basically, suttle acting, good hand acting, being able to breakdown a live action video and a nice finished dialogue sequence. I might post a work in progress later this month! Let me know what you think, all criticism is always welcome!

Well, we have a pitch package due in class tomorrow. It's a four week assignment and I started today. We needed painted characters and I didn't want to draw anything new. I realized that my sketch book is full of Orangutans , so I need to think of a story involving one. Basically the story is about a homeless guy (left) - every time he goes on drugs, he believes he is an Orangutan. Bizarre, I know. Here's some more sketches from my sketchbook! Enjoy!

That's my girlfriend Gil on the left, despite my effort I still can't make her look as pretty as she is. Some grumpy dude bottom right from Bayshore food court. Above him is some old guy I drew, then I realized he looks like Pixars new character in "Up"...except not nearly as good. On the top left is a pen sketch I did while watching "No Country For Old Men" ( I paused it)-apparently drawing without an eraser is alot harder than I thought, I don't think they look too much like the characters. Well, the guy on the left is from BillingsBridge Shopping Plaza. For anybody who lives in the Ottawa area, I highly recomend Billings Bridge to draw. Apparently all the funny looking people in the city get together to hang out there. It's really odd, there's also an extemely high population of old people (my favourite to draw). The guy on the right is from the Algonquin Caf. Collin and were sketching there befor class, this guy was giving everyone dirty looks. Not only that, but this crazy crack head lady that works the cashier just about ran him over with a trolly full of food. I hope you can catch the Jurassic Park reference in his picture; if you can't, watch the movie again and again until you do.

( sorry for the "crack head" reference, but it's really the only good way to describe the lady)

Apparently Second Cup is an awesome place to sketch people. I like this one because she has what I refer to as, "the pouch". It seems to be a loose piece of skin, that some how connects to the tip of the chin, down to the base of the neck, that you can aquire with age. Chances are, I'll get one just for posting this...
